Removals to Portugal
Removals to Portugal
UK to Portugal removals run end-to-end by MTC International. Algarve coastal property moves, central Portugal relocations to Coimbra and the Silver Coast, Lisbon and Porto city deliveries. One MTC team from UK collection to Portuguese delivery, customs paperwork handled in-house.
UK to Portugal — how the route runs
Channel crossing, French transit, Iberian routing into Portugal
Portugal sits at the western edge of the Iberian peninsula, which means UK-Portugal routing is one of the longer continental drives in our European service. Channel crossing via Eurotunnel or Dover-Calais, then continental drive through France into Spain at Hendaye/Irún, across the Spanish peninsula, and into Portugal — most commonly across the Tagus near the Spanish border for southern destinations, or via Salamanca and the A25 for northern Portugal.
Which Portuguese entry point we use depends on destination. Algarve moves route through the south; Lisbon and central Portugal via the central crossing; Porto and northern Portugal via the northern A25 corridor. Same MTC team start to finish.
Where in Portugal we deliver to
Portuguese destination types are more concentrated than Spanish ones. The Algarve dominates the coastal property mix; Lisbon and Porto split the city moves; central Portugal is a steadily growing remote-worker and retiree destination.
- Algarve — Albufeira, Lagos, Vilamoura, Faro, Tavira, Quinta do Lago — the most active Portuguese destination region. UK retirees, remote workers, and second-home buyers moving to coastal apartments, villas in golf resorts, and inland village properties.
- Lisbon and Estoril coast — central Lisbon apartment moves with narrow-access Alfama and Bairro Alto logistics; Cascais and Estoril coastal property; suburban moves to Oeiras and Carcavelos.
- Porto and the Douro Valley — central Porto property moves into the Ribeira and Foz districts; outlying Porto suburbs; Douro wine-region property destinations.
- Silver Coast — Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos, Nazaré, Peniche, Foz do Arelho — the steadily growing UK-resident destination band between Lisbon and Porto. Coastal village and rural inland properties.
- Coimbra and central Portugal — university-town moves into Coimbra; rural central-Portugal property destinations around Tomar, Castelo Branco, and the Serra da Estrela inland.
- Madeira (by arrangement) — Atlantic island destination requiring sea-freight routing from a Portuguese mainland port. Quoted per move with explicit timing and access notes at survey.
UK pickups for Portugal routes
Portugal routes run from across the UK. London and Greater London pickups are the highest-volume, with Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, Brighton, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Glasgow all running consolidated Portugal-bound loads on regular schedules. Smaller-town collections from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland slot into the same scheduling.
Customs paperwork for UK to Portugal moves
Portuguese customs (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira) require an import declaration on personal effects, supporting paperwork around the move’s purpose, and the Portuguese transfer-of-residence equivalent (the Bagagem de Mudança certificate) where the move is permanent. MTC handles the customs declaration paperwork in-house.
- Export and import declarations handled by our customs desk.
- EORI guidance at survey.
- Bagagem de Mudança (transfer-of-residence) documentation for permanent Portuguese residency moves — requires NIF (Portuguese tax number) and proof of address at destination, which you arrange independently before the move.
- Itemised inventory in the format Portuguese customs expect, with values for the import declaration.
- High-value item declarations — antiques, art, jewellery, instruments — at survey.
What tends to come up on UK to Portugal moves
- Algarve gated-community delivery logistics — Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and similar golf resorts require pre-arranged gate access and delivery slot booking; survey captures this.
- Narrow Algarve old-town access — Lagos, Tavira and inland Algarve villages have narrow streets; van-to-van shuttle from a turning point is planned at survey where the lorry can't get close.
- Lisbon historic-centre logistics — Alfama, Bairro Alto, and Príncipe Real have narrow streets and steep gradients; lift permits and time-window restrictions arranged ahead of delivery day.
- NHR scheme timing — UK residents moving to Portugal under residency tax schemes need NIF and Bagagem de Mudança paperwork lined up before the move; we'll flag the documentation but the residency setup is your own legal adviser's territory.
- Portuguese completion timing — like Spanish completions, Portuguese property completions can slip. Storage on either side is built into the quote where the destination isn’t locked.
- Climate adjustments to furniture — heavy UK upholstered furniture often doesn't suit the Algarve climate. Movers commonly downsize what they bring; the quote accommodates list changes up to a fortnight before pickup.
- Pets, vehicles, boats — out of scope. Use a specialist relocator.
